Wildlife Friendly Drivers – Wilpattu National Park

The Green World Trust (GWT) with the assistance of the Open University of Sri Lanka and The Department of Wildlife Conservation conducted a workshop on 19th November 2015 at Maradanmaduwa, Wilpattuwa National Park.
The reprehensible conduct of jeep drivers threatens the natural behavior of animals with a few reported cases even escalating to resulting in fatalities to wild life. Green World Trust (GWT) has identified this as one of the problems that needs to be eliminated through continued education.
The workshop was conducted with the objective to instill basic environmental awareness in Safari jeep owners and drivers.Importance of the Wilpattu National Park, Basic understanding of Tourism industry and services, Biodiversity conservation, Park law, Code of Conducts required to be followed inside the park, How to appreciate and satisfy visitors showing of other animals of the park (except Leopard, bare and elephant), Do’s and Don’ts inside the park., Elephant conservation, Human elephant conflict subject areas were covered through the program.
Total number of participants were 50 including both drivers and owners and newly appointed wildlife Trackers. As the resource personals Dr. U Kalinga Padmalal, Dr. Sevvandhi Jayakody, Mrs. Chandanie Wiloson, Mr. Chinthana Dumiduhewa, Mr. Dissanayake and Mr. Bimal of the Wilpattu National Park was contributed.
