Ongoing Project: Understanding Carnivores of Sri Lanka

Green World Trust is currently engaged in an exciting and crucial project, titled “Diversity and Ecology of Terrestrial Carnivorous Mammals of the Order: Carnivora in Wasgamuwa and Maduru Oya Areas of Sri Lanka.” This ongoing research is dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the diverse range of carnivorous mammals, particularly focusing on bears and wild cats, in the distinct ecosystems of Wasgamuwa and Maduru Oya National Parks.

The core of this project is to delve into several aspects of these mammals’ lives. We aim to assess their foraging patterns, understand how they share and separate their ecological niches, and explore their habitat preferences. This research is particularly significant because it addresses a gap in current knowledge about the carnivore population in these areas.

Our team is working tirelessly to achieve several specific objectives. These include estimating the diversity of terrestrial mammal carnivores, identifying species that coexist in the same habitats, analyzing their diet and foraging behaviors, and investigating their preferred habitats. Additionally, we are exploring how these species successfully coexist without infringing on each other’s ecological niches.

Through this project, Green World Trust is committed to providing comprehensive population estimates for these carnivores, thereby contributing valuable data to the conservation efforts in Sri Lanka. Our dedication to understanding and preserving the natural world drives this project, highlighting our role in the stewardship of Sri Lanka’s unique and precious wildlife.
